Here’s the tea..
Felt Film worked with Moreton Bay College to create a cinematic, story-driven dance video that highlighted the school’s talented dancers across different styles and age groups. With just five days to prepare before the shoot, we stepped in quickly to reimagine their initial idea and turn it into something far more elevated and memorable. The project’s biggest strengths were in how we pivoted their vision into a polished, narrative-focused video and how we delivered everything on time — including a last-minute vertical cut for social media. We did learn a couple of things along the way, like the importance of preparing for different formats from the start and making sure the story flow is tight during production to save time in post. In the end, both the full video and social media reel were a huge success, and it was awesome to deliver something that really captured the class and heritage of Moreton Bay College.
Morton Bay College, a girls' school in Manly West offering education from primary to senior levels, approached Felt Film to create a video that would showcase their dance students and be featured at the school's annual dance performance night. The project required a quick turnaround, with just five days from the initial phone call to the scheduled shoot. Felt Film's ability to step in quickly, reimagine the creative direction, and deliver a high-quality, story-driven video was a testament to the team's flexibility, creativity, and professionalism.
So you know of…
Pre-Production
In preparation for the in-person meeting, Felt Film conducted a creative workshop and gathered visual references to pitch a more cinematic approach. During the meeting, the team presented reference videos to showcase their vision, which helped the client understand the professional quality and storytelling approach Felt Film was proposing. This meeting also included a location scout, where potential filming spots around the school were photographed and documented for the shot list. With the dance director’s enthusiastic involvement, a clear schedule was established for two early morning shoot days. The school ensured all permissions, facilities, and participants were in place to make the production a success.
Post-Production
The post-production process was efficient and seamless. With a week of editing, Felt Film delivered a polished final video with no need for client revisions, despite offering two rounds as part of the package. The editing process involved cutting the original three-minute music track down to approximately one minute and forty-five seconds, creating a tight, engaging video that showcased the dancers and maintained a strong sense of pacing. The editing style was minimalist, focusing on clean transitions and simple logo graphics, ensuring the dancers remained the focal point. The final video perfectly captured Morton Bay College’s values and the diverse talent of their students.
The initial contact with Morton Bay College was through a phone call, during which the school outlined their vision for the video. Their primary goals were to showcase the talent and diversity of their dance students, covering various styles and age groups, while also ensuring the video reflected the school's core values. Inspired by the early 2010s dance film *Step Up*, they initially envisioned a straightforward production. However, they were open to creative input, and during an in-person meeting, Felt Film presented a more ambitious, storytelling-driven concept that immediately excited the client.
Onboarding
The production phase went smoothly due to the detailed pre-production work. The team filmed over two mornings, capturing various dance performances across multiple locations within the school. The shoot incorporated a variety of techniques, including the use of ProMist filters, vintage lenses, and smoke machines to create a unique, cinematic aesthetic. During a break on the second day, the team reviewed footage and identified a gap in the narrative flow, quickly brainstorming and filming a linking scene to ensure the story felt cohesive. The footage captured was visually stunning, and the entire shoot was completed on schedule.
Production
The final video was delivered to Morton Bay College through Dropbox. The client was thrilled with the final product and requested an additional vertical cut for social media, which Felt Film provided as a 30-second trailer and hype reel for Instagram and Facebook. This was easily accomplished during post-production, thanks to the team's foresight in framing the shots with versatility in mind. The vertical version maintained the same cinematic quality and elegance as the original cut, ensuring that Morton Bay College's digital presence matched their prestigious heritage. Throughout the delivery process, Felt Film remained focused on creating a video that aligned with the school's values and reputation, presenting a polished, story-driven final product that felt authentic to the school's identity. The project showcased Felt Film’s ability to execute high-quality, cinematic storytelling on a tight deadline, and both the horizontal and vertical cuts were well received by the client and their audience.
